Practicing this week was a lot of fun! I utilized the ear training techniques that I learned from Kaylyn, Aural Skills, Patrice, and Thomas to really drill some tricky sections in the Laitman set. At first it was slow going, but the more I worked on those lines, the faster they came and the more comfortable I was singing them-- even when I added crazy piano parts. I know there are still some things I want to clean up with them, but even if they're not perfect, I have learned so much just in the process of trying to prepare them.
In my lesson Friday we found that my [a] vowel is losing height in the soft pallet. We tried a number of strategies, and the most successful one was taking a surprised breath with cold air at the roof of my mouth before singing our /hunga/ 54321 exercise. We also had great success with [u] again this week! We used the [u] shape to create my [i] vowel and the flipping over and forward to go into the top of my range felt amazing. We also found that the sound was getting a little dark and heavy. My tongue has been pressing back towards my larynx. We utilized that [i] inside the [u] and thinking up and brighter find a more forward sound. I'm still not 100% sure how to tell the difference between the darker way and the more balanced way. However, I know that opening my mouth and those surprised breaths made a difference and are easy to practice. I can work on those and just trust the process without having to overthink anything.
