Courtney Fairbourn- Practice Journal 4/4-4/10/2022

I feel like my practicing this week took leaps and bounds. I was getting frustrated because I felt like the things I was practicing weren't sticking, and I wasn't learning music very quickly so I took action. I looked back over past notes from lessons to find what I was missing and forgetting to work on, and reached out to Kaylyn. Since she just learned all of that Laitman for the opera, I thought she might have some ideas on how to learn my Laitman more quickly and accurately. She gave me some great ideas including the following:
  • Play the line on the piano while mouthing the words to get the tune in your ear
  • Make up a chord progression to play with the melody to help you hear the movement from note to note
    • Then move to playing the actual chords that are written
  • Displace tricky sections by an octave to make it more obvious what the weird notes are
  • Hear the melody silently in your head, alternate notes that you hear mentally and those that you sing out loud
These made a huge difference. She came and practiced with me for a minute to help me figure out exactly how to use these strategies in my practice and told me "I think you need to stop being so concerned with what's going wrong and practice more of what is going well."

That COMPLETELY changed my perspective.

This week I've tried to find strategies that work and feel good and then repeat them and enjoy them. Practicing has been FUN! :D Which I know is not that novel for many people, but it sure is for me haha!
