Voice Lessons January 18th, 2022

This week I have been sick and trying to pick out new repetoire for the semester so I haven't had a chance to really practice yet. I was able to go to my first voice lesson before being officially diagnosed with covid though so I will write about that this week. My voice lesson was on wednesday right after I got off of work in the morning. Because I am coming to my voice lessons straight from work I often don't have much time to warm-up before I come. We spent most of my lesson reviewing past repetoire and discussing rep options for my upcoming junior voice recital at the end of this semester. We decided on some good repetoire that I can start learning this semester for either my junior recital this semester or my senior recital next year. I really love the way my voice sounds with Puccini so I  will probably sing an aria or song by him. I also love singing melismatic Baroque music so I will be including some of that as well. I found a French cycle that I will be learning for my senior recital that is absolutely lovely. I also love Hundley's settings so I am going to sing a previous song and learn a new one. Overall I'm really excited about the music I am learning this semester.

The rest of the lesson time was spent doing some warm-ups. We did the "Ni, Ne, Na, No, Nu" exercise on a single note trying to find that forward pocket that I described as "backwards whistle" shaped in my mouth with the bell of the whistle taking up the space in the back of my mouth between my molars and my soft palate. Once I got my voice into that space, it was easier for all of the vowels to fall into that place. We also did some exercises that worked on my upper range past my passagio. I love the way I can feel the resonance for those upper notes in my head. It was a great lesson and I am excited to work harder to expand and solidify my vocal technique this semester.
